Council approved leasing three land-locked parcels in Collinwood to Meadow City Native Plant Nursery.

Meadow City Nursery opened in 2023 and aims to introduce a diverse selection of native plants to local landscapes and gardens while fostering ecological literacy within the community. At the Westropp Ave. nursery, not far from I-90 and E. 152nd St., shoppers can purchase native perennial and annual plants and learn how to use them in their yards.

The parcels leased by the nursery are located north of Interstate 90 near Waterloo Road/Marginal Road. These lands are vacant remnant parcels that were acquired by the City in connection with the construction of Interstate 90. The plots will be well-maintained wildflower beds, which Meadow City, staff would enter by foot to collect seed by hand as the land is not accessible by vehicular traffic. The $900 lease is for three years.

The nursery rents its current location which was a previously vacant lot from the Cleveland Land Bank for $2 a year.

In order to grow more plants, Meadow City, was looking for land to establish "native seed garden plots". These seeds would then be used to grow native plants at their nursery. Native plants are the ones local wildlife depends upon.

They plan to keep these plots and property well maintained by weeding and mowing every two weeks. They also plan to build attractive welded-wire fences with wooden posts around the property. There won't be any customer or visitor activity at this site.

Be on the lookout for free seeds from local libraries starting in the spring.
