Council Meeting Highlights

City Council held its regular meeting tonight, both in person in Council Chambers and live streamed. Councilman Brian Kazy did a special presentation with representatives of the Down Syndrome Association of Northeast Ohio. Cleveland Down Syndrome Day is Oct. 12. Council's next meeting will be Monday, Oct. 14. Here are today’s highlights:

Public Safety Equipment

Several pieces of legislation concerning different divisions of Public Safety were passed tonight, including:

  • The purchase of hazmat suits, for the Division of Emergency Medical Service, for $288,000
  • The purchase of medical stair chairs, for the Division of Emergency Medical Service, $220,000
  • The purchase of patient ventilators, for the Division of Emergency Medical Service, $540,000
  • The purchase of turnout gear, for the Division of Fire, $202,564

Don't Forget to Vote: Council approved giving full-time city of Cleveland employees four hours of paid time off  to vote on Nov. 5, the upcoming election. The legislation would give employees this paid time off each general election day which occurs on the first Tuesday after the first Monday each November. Union employees are not included at this point. Ord. No. 1082-2024

Citizens Not Politicians: Council passed a resolution, sponsored by Councilman Richard Starr, supporting the Citizens Not Politicians-Citizens Redistricting Commission Initiative, which would transfer the power of drawing legislative and congressional maps from politicians and lobbyists to the citizens of Ohio; and urging Ohioans and Cleveland citizens to support this Issue 1 citizen lead ballot initiative to end partisan gerrymandering in Ohio for a freer, more democratic state. Ord. No. 1083-2024

Introduced

Legislation was introduced that would amend the current street racing laws (433.07) to expand the definitions to include these recent  "street takeovers" including blocking intersections, burnouts, doughnuts, wheelies, drifting (side skid), and stunt driving.  The new legislation would also make "vehicle components" subject to forfeiture. Ord. No.1080-2024

Legislation was introduced that would discontinue (eliminate) both the Office of Information Technology Planning and the Office of Urban Analytics and Innovation and instead establish a new Division of Information Technology and Services. Ord. No. 1081-2024
