Council Meeting Highlights

City Council restarted its regular Monday meeting’s tonight after the Summer recess, both in person in Council Chambers and live streamed. Council's next meeting will be Monday, Sept. 16th. Here are today’s highlights:
New Equipment for the Department of Public Utilities: Council approved the purchase, lease, or lease with option to purchase, of various on-road vehicles, apparatus, and off road equipment, cabs, bodies and accessories, equipment, and other aftermarket items necessary to equip the vehicles authorized for their intended purposes for the Department of Public Utilities. The equipment includes, but is not limited to, vans, backhoes, bobcats, dump trucks, pickup trucks, cement mixers and sewer cleaning equipment. The cost of the equipment is estimated to be $9,676,500. Ord. No. 718-2024
Trying Again for Tree Support: Council approved the city applying for and then if awarded accepting a $3.4 million grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, for the Strategic Investments in Equitable Tree Canopy Growth and Preservation Grant. The grant comes from the federal Inflation Reduction Act. The city applied last year with a partner and were not awarded. The funding would go toward tree removal and critical pruning for those trees that need it, but would also go to tree maintenance across the city as well as creation a tree inventory across the city. The Roundstone Pavilion at Ohio City Farm: Council approved providing a grant not to exceed $150,000 for The Refugee Response (doing business as Re:Source Cleveland), to provide economic development assistance to partially finance the building of The Roundstone Pavilion at the Ohio City Farm. The pavilion will help the farm advance their mission and further cement the Ohio City Farm as a key part of the nearby Irishtown Bend project. It will offer enhanced facilities for the farm operations, and a low-risk environment for newcomer growers and food entrepreneurs to build their businesses and engage with a growing customer base. Introduced:
Legislation was introduced that will change rules and rates for electricity charges for the Division of Cleveland Public Power. The legislation must first go to the Directors of Public Utilities, Finance, and Law before coming to Council Committee meetings for public discussion, including Utilities, Finance Diversity Equity and Inclusion and then to full Council Meeting.
