The former Dave’s Market grocery store in Collinwood will be purchased by the city of Cleveland, and will be positioned for redevelopment.

City Council recently approved the nearly $1.5 million purchase, which paves the way for the city to close on the 4.24-acre site on Lakeshore Boulevard by year’s end.

Once acquired by the city land bank, Cleveland intends to clean up the property, market it to developers, and ultimately find a new use. When factoring in two adjoining parcels that are owned by the county land bank, the site could be offered as a contiguous six-acre piece of land.

The location is prime. It’s located next to Collinwood Recreation Center and Humphrey Park, and is across the street from Lake Erie and the Cleveland Metroparks’ planned expansion of Euclid Beach Park.

On top of roughly $1.1 million from the city, Councilman Mike Polensek used $350,000 in money set aside for Ward 8 to help close the deal.

“I’m committed to reimagining Lakeshore Boulevard,” Councilman Polensek said about that part of his ward.  "When Dave's closed, it was like a gut punch to the neighborhood."

The closure of Dave’s about two years ago, posed a significant challenge and threatened to make the neighborhood a food desert.

The city’s purchase of the building is poised to bolster the Metroparks’ efforts at Euclid Beach Park, and other recent public investments made along the neighborhood’s lakefront. Ord. No. 1170-2024
