Applicants Sought for Civilian Police Review Board

Jul 02, 2025

Cleveland City Council is looking for qualified applicants to fill two seats on the Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB) established by voters in 2016.

One of the board positions is for a 4-year term that began on February 23, 2025, and ends February 22, 2029; the other position is for a 4-year term beginning August 17, 2025, through August 16, 2029.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and must also live in the City of Cleveland.

Other requirements:

1.    Applicants for the CPRB vacancy must not be law enforcement officers or current or former employees of the Cleveland Division of Police.
2.    Applicants cannot be currently employed by the City of Cleveland or by any public agency having a connection with the City of Cleveland, including county agencies and community development corporations.

The Civilian Police Review Board reviews completed investigations of alleged police misconduct, deadly force, and matters requested by the Director of Public Safety.

Investigations of police misconduct are conducted by the Office of Professional Standards, an independent City of Cleveland agency established for the purpose of investigating non-criminal complaints filed by members of the public against sworn and nonsworn Division of Police employees.

Compensation for Civilian Police Review Board members, a part-time position, is $8,963.  The Board meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 10 am.  Meetings can last as long as four hours or more.

Board members should expect to review an average of 15 to 20 cases each month before regular board meetings. Such a review includes reading reports; reviewing statements by complainants, officers, and witnesses; considering supporting evidence and documents; and watching video footage, including video from body-worn cameras. Each case will take an average of at least 1 to 2 hours of personal time to prepare in advance of board meetings. Some cases may demand more time depending on the volume of evidence.

Board meetings can be viewed on the Office of Professional Standards YouTube page.

To apply, please submit a resume with your work history and a cover letter to Cleveland City Council at  media@clevelandcitycouncil.org  by 5 p.m. Friday, July 31st.
