Council President Griffin Appointed to Serve on Two National League of Cities’ Committees

Cleveland (Feb. 23, 2023) – Council President Blaine A. Griffin has been appointed to two National League of Cities’ committees for 2023, the Finance, Administration and Intergovernmental Affairs (FAIR) Federal Advocacy Committee and the Race Equity And Leadership (REAL) Council.

As a member of NLC’s FAIR Committee, Council President Griffin will be part of the team providing strategic direction and guidance for NLC’s federal advocacy agenda and policy priorities on financing, budget, census, federal guidance compliance issues and more.

As a member of the REAL Council, the Council President will work to develop and guide programs among local elected officials from similar communities. The REAL Council provides guidance to member leaders on efforts that address the impact of race and equity issues in their communities. 

Both one-year appointments were recently announced by NLC President Mayor Victoria Woodards of Tacoma, Washington.

“I’m excited and honored to have been appointed to these two impactful NLC efforts,” said Council President Griffin. “Being on this committee and council will give me insight into other cities’ efforts and strategies. It’s also important to hear and learn about failures. Both are important to bring back to Cleveland.”

As a member of NLC’s FAIR Committee, Council President Griffin will play a key role in shaping NLC’s policy positions and advocate on behalf of America’s cities, towns and villages before Congress, with the administration, and at home.

As a member of NLC’s REAL Council, Council President Griffin will play a key role among a diverse group of local leaders to encourage collaboration, networking and the development of resources and programs beneficial to communities that share demographics, size or location that can be replicated across the country.

“Our member councils give voice to what’s happening on the ground in our communities,” said NLC President Mayor  Woodards. “And NLC’s federal advocacy committees are a key tool for gathering insights directly from the communities that our members serve.

“I am proud to have Council President Griffin join me on both efforts. Together with these teams of local leaders from around the country, we will work to address the toughest challenges facing our communities and ensure that America’s cities, towns and villages have the resources they need to thrive.”

The National League of Cities is a nonpartisan organization comprised of city, town and village leaders that are focused on improving the quality of life for their constituents. Nearing 100 years of working with local governments, the NLC counts more than 2,700 cities across the nation as members.
