Councilman Applauds Arrest of Suspect in Hit-and-Run Death of 7-Year-Old

Sep 04, 2024

Councilman Mike Polensek congratulates the Command Staff of the Cleveland Division of Police and their investigative units along with U.S. Marshal Pete Elliot and his team for their aggressive work in finding and arresting Donald Mynatt, who is the named suspect in the death of 7-year-old Amir Prewitt Alexander.

Amir was killed in the parking lot of Lakeshore Beach Apartments located at 16024 Lakeshore Boulevard in the North Shore Collinwood community on August 16th . Police said Amir was dragged underneath the vehicle and it refused to stop. The SUV was found later, abandoned on St Clair Avenue.

Donald Mynatt, 32, was arrested in the 4800 block of East 355th Street in Willoughby, Ohio. Mynatt was wanted on charges of leaving the scene of an accident involving a death.

“Amir’s heartbroken mother can have some peace that the suspect is now in custody,” said Councilman Polensek, who has been dealing with Mynatt since he was 15 years old. “But that doesn’t bring Amir back.”

“The suspect should have turned himself in, instead of running and hiding,” added the Councilman. Cuyahoga County prosecutors are expected to take Mynatt’s case to a Grand Jury in a matter of days. The charges are expected to be upgraded to first-degree felonies, which Councilman Polensek wholeheartedly supports.

Amir would have been a second-grader at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Cleveland this fall.

Councilman Polensek concludes his remarks with, “We should keep Amir and his family in our prayers.”
