Cleveland City Council Concludes Day One of 2024 Budget Hearings

Cleveland, OH (February 20, 2024) – Council members completed day one of budget hearings. Day two of Budget hearings will convene on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at 9:00 am.
Council spent the first half of the day listening to the mayor’s presentation of the budget and discussing their community’s priorities and concerns with the administration. Members discussed an array of topics, including:
· Recruiting, hiring, and retaining police officers
· Reducing the number of budgeted, uniformed police officers
· Addressing the newly created “vacancy pool” for hiring
· Increasing the number of Building & Housing workers
· Improving Parks & Recreation facilities and programming
· Funding for the restoration of the city’s tree canopy
· Discussing funding concerns for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District
· Planning strategically for the future
Members spent the second half of the meeting reviewing the budgets of City Council/Clerk of Council, Office of the Mayor, Landmarks Commission, Board of Building Standards and Appeals, Board of Zoning Appeals, City Planning Commission, Department of Aging, and the Department of Law.
On Wednesday, Council is scheduled to review budgets for the Department of Public Safety, Community Police Commission, Office of Professional Standards, and the Police Review Board.
