New Nature Preserve and Learning Center in Slavic Village

October 04, 2018

A ground breaking for the new four-acre wetland, nature preserve and learning center on what was the old power plant for the Cleveland Worsted Mill is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 5.

The Morgana Bluff Nature Preserve being developed along Broadway Avenue is the brainchild of Robert Koonce, development director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland The land is adjacent to the Boys & Girls Club, which was built on the former site of the main mill structure. The mill,  once one of the largest garment manufacturers in the country, operated from 1878 to 1956. The whole complex was destroyed in a giant fire in 1993.

The new nature preserve and learning center will be between the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland and Mound Stem School and connect to the Morgana Run trail and give students access to nature, with new hiking and biking trails added as well as wildlife observation posts and other programs so youth can learn about the science of wetlands, native plants and more.

The preserve is slated to open in September 2019 and work is already underway to remove invasive trees and underbrush. Soon trees and plants that are native to Northeast Ohio will be planted and the storm water from the Boys & Girls Club site will be redirected into the preserve to enhance the natural wetlands.
