City Reports Progress on Demolitions

February 08, 2018

Since 2006, the City of Cleveland has demolished more than 9,350 dangerous, condemned structures throughout the city at a cost of $68.3 million, according to a report this week by Mayor Frank G. Jackson’s office to Cleveland City Council.

Additionally, the Cuyahoga County Landbank demolished 4,703 structures in the city during that same time period, according to the report.

A vast majority of structures razed by the city are on privately owned commercial and residential properties. The county landbank separately razes structures through privately foreclosed properties from banks and other lending institutions.

Once the city demolishes a building, the property owner is billed for the cost of demolition, which might include asbestos abatement.

If the cost goes unpaid, the amount is tagged to the property’s taxes. If the taxes are not paid, the county can initiate foreclosure proceedings.

Additionally, unpaid demolition costs go into collection as civil debt to the city. The report was prepared for the Block Grant hearings held by the Development Planning & Sustainability committee.

For more information about demolitions call Councilman Anthony Brancatelli, chairman of City Council’s Development Planning & Sustainability committee, at 216-664-4233.
