Congresswoman Kaptur, Councilman Brancatelli and Mayor Jackson Re-dedicate Park

August 02, 2018
Once a Super Fund Site; Now a 12-acre Park

Councilman Tony Brancatelli, joined by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Mayor Frank Jackson and community activists, will gather at W.C. Reed Park on Cleveland’s West Side Friday, August 3, to re-dedicate and reopen the public space which had been closed for a major cleanup.

The 12-acre park, named after former Councilman William C. Reed who served in the 1940s, is located in the Brooklyn Centre neighborhood between Denison Avenue and Pearl Road, just south of Riverside Cemetery.

Prior to being a park, the space had been a dump for garbage and industrial waste, teeming with dangerous levels of toxic pollutants. The city closed the park in 2013, following soil testing, placing it on the list of the U.S. EPA’s Superfund sites.

A $3 million EPA cleanup included a two-foot buildup of clean topsoil, storm water drainage and underground conduit for lighting. The city spent $1 million for new playground equipment, a ball field, a basketball court, sidewalks, a paved parking lot and newly seeded grass.

“We now have a new wide-open space of recreational land that is safe and clean for all to enjoy,” said Councilman Brancatelli. “After decades of dumping dangerous pollutants on this site, Mother Nature has joined us in giving it a new life.”
