Two Openings for Civilian Police Review Board – Applicants Sought Including Under 30 yrs Old

January 05, 2021
Cleveland City Council is looking for qualified applicants to fill two seats on the Civilian Police Review Board (CPRB) established by voters in 2016.

The board positions are for a four year term. The terms of both positions run from February 8, 2021 to February 7, 2025. Under the Charter, at least one current open position requires that the appointment be made to a person between the ages of 18 and 30.  Applicants must also live in the City of Cleveland.

Other requirements:
  • Persons applying to fill the vacancy on the CPRB cannot be employed currently as a law enforcement officer and cannot be a current or former employee of the Cleveland Division of Police.
  • Applicants cannot be currently employed by the City of Cleveland or by any public agency having a connection with the City of Cleveland including county agencies and community development corporations.
The Civilian Police Review Board reviews completed investigations of alleged police misconduct, deadly force, and matters requested by the Director of Public Safety.

Investigations of police misconduct are conducted by the Office of Professional Standards, an independent City of Cleveland agency established for the purpose of investigating non-criminal complaints filed by members of the public against sworn and nonsworn Division of Police employees.

Compensation for Civilian Police Review Board members, a part-time position, is $7,200 a year.  The Board meets the second Tuesday of each month at 10 am.  Meetings can last as long as four hours or more.

Board members should expect to review an average of 15 to 20 cases each month prior to regular board meetings. Such review includes reading reports; reviewing statements by complainants, officers, and witnesses; considering supporting evidence and documents; and watching video footage, including video from body-worn cameras. Each individual case will take an average of at least 1 to 2 hours personal time to prepare in advance of board meetings. Some cases may demand more time depending on the volume of evidence.

To review meetings, you can view them on the Office of Professional Standards YouTube page.

To apply, please submit a resume with work history and a cover letter to Cleveland City Council at  jmazzolini@clevelandcitycouncil.org by the end of day, Thursday, Feb. 4th.
