Councilmember Spencer recognized for Leadership in Democracy

January 25, 2021
Cleveland City Councilmember Jenny Spencer is a runner-up winner of the 2020 Paul and Joyce Aicher Leadership in Democracy Award.

The Aicher award is bestowed annually by Everyday Democracy, a Hartford, Connecticut based project of the Paul J. Aicher Foundation, whose mission is to advance deliberative democracy and improve the quality of public life in the United States.

Each year, Everyday Democracy recognizes standout community change agents — persons or organizations whose work in their community exemplifies the values on which they were founded: voice for all, connection across difference, racial equity, and community change. Paul and Joyce Aicher Leadership in Democracy Award winners are individuals or organizations in the U.S. whose achievements can be lifted up for others to aspire to.

Councilmember Spencer was selected from multiple nominees nationwide for her ongoing dedication to her Cleveland, Ohio community and specifically for her commitment to voter registration and engagement. Most recently, Councilmember Spencer launched a grassroots effort during the COVID-19 pandemic to register voters in low turnout areas of her Ward.

As a runner-up award winner, Councilmember Spencer is the recipient of a $2,500 cash award which she will use to further democracy building initiatives in Ward 15.
