Landmark Designation for the Old Riverbed Fire Engine Company

Council approved a Landmark designation at it's Dec. 2nd meeting for the former Cleveland Police Department Riverbed Academy (aka former Cleveland Fire Department Engine Company 15 Fireboat Station) as 1283 Riverbed Street.
 
On September 7, 1884 there was the largest fire in the City’s history and on September 21, 1884 there were multiple arson fires in the lumber district, both of which called attention to the need for a fireboat. In 1886, the first fireboat was launched and in 1894 a second fireboat was launched.
 
“A new house for the crew of fireboat Engine Co. 15 was finished late in 1920 (occupied January 1921) at 1283 Riverbed Road on the west bank of the Cuyahoga. Prior to that time, the crew had quarters and a workshop further up the river.” –The Cleveland Fire Department Commemorative Book.
 
The station also served as the Harbormaster’s office, in was renovated for use as a fire station in 1954 and re-established Fireboat Engine Co. 15. In January 1964 –Company disbanded and property vacated. It was also used for long shore sailboats, the International Longshoreman’s Association, a part of Heritage Park II, the Flats Oxbow Association until 2011 it became vacant. Ord. 35-2020.
