Councilman Blaine A. Griffin's Statement on Ending Cuba Embargo

July 10, 2020
I am extremely proud that this 133rd Cleveland City Council unanimously voted for And the Mayor signed Resolution 525-2020 to End the Cuban Embargo. I sponsored this resolution because It is past time to end this embargo.

Cuba has long been an innovative leader in Public Health, biotech and drug development. Cuba has experienced minimal impact from the COVID-19 Pandemic because of their sophisticated public health approach and their ability to develop drugs like CIBG 258.

Cleveland has some of the highest ranking hospitals and healthcare institutions in the world. It is natural fit and essential for us to develop a unique partnership with a world leader in health care.

In addition, the island of Cuba was an important stop in the Middle Passage. Many of us share a kindred spirit and a considerable amount of affection for Cuban culture.

It is my hope that this embargo is lifted so we can build a fruitful partnership with one of our closest neighbors to the South through trade, travel and share cutting edge medical strategies that will be mutually beneficial to each other.

I’d like to thank Ambassador Jose Ramon Cabanas for meeting with myself and some of my colleagues to help us understand why it is so important for cities like Cleveland to establish diplomatic and economic ties to Cuba. This Embargo needs to end now and Cleveland needs to position itself to be a partner with this historic and amazing country.
