Black Lives Matter Mural a Community Effort

July 07, 2020
Recently, artists and Cleveland residents joined the growing number of cities like Seattle, Washington DC and Akron to create a message of hope on their city streets.

Inspired by the protests against police brutality and calls for change, the 200-foot Black Lives Matter mural, at East 93rd Street and Bessemer Avenue on Cleveland’s East Side, was organized by activist, writer and comedian Ricky Smith, founder of the non-profit Random Acts Of Kindness Everywhere and Stamy Paul, owner of Graffiti Heart Gallery.

"This was a true community effort," said Councilman Blaine A. Griffin whose ward the mural is in. "The reaction has been amazing. People from all over the city and the region are coming to see it."

The site of the mural is in one of Cleveland’s less traveled neighborhoods, Union Miles Park, an urban community plagued by violent crime and high poverty rate. Work on the mural began with the closing of Bessemer and East 93rd.

Sherwin Williams donated 50 gallons of outdoor paint towards the project. It’s made to stand up to harsh northeast Ohio winters, ensuring that the messages of change will be there for years to come. Plans to open the street to traffic July 6 remain in place after the mural was vandalized across some of the lettering.
