Vision Zero: Effort to Reduce Driver and Pedestrian Deaths

November 18, 2019
Too many people - pedestrians and those in cars or on bikes and scooters - are injured or killed in crashes.

City Council approved legislation on Monday, Nov. 18 authorizing the city to hire consultants to develop and implement “Vision Zero,” a strategy to eliminate all mobile transportation and pedestrian collisions, many of which result in  fatalities or serious injuries. Vision Zero began in Sweden, which has one of the lowest annual rates of collision deaths in the world.

Between 2011 and 2015, there were more than 120,000 vehicle crashes in Cuyahoga County, 44 percent of which were in Cleveland.

The aim of Vision Zero is to eliminate traffic- and pedestrian-related fatalities and serious injuries. The initiative brings together government, relevant agencies and community stakeholders to design safe, healthy and equitable mobility.

“We’re moving from the planning stage to the action stage,” said Councilman Matt Zone, a primary sponsor of the ordinance. Ord. No. 1338-2019.
