Ward 15 Councilman Matt Zone, the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization (DSCDO) and many concerned residents and organizations are working together to assist families affected by the explosion that occurred on West 83rd Street. Currently, the most urgent need is for housing for six families that have been displaced by the explosion including eight adults and four children. All of the families have been offered emergency housing provided by the City of Cleveland at the Cudell Recreation Center. Councilman Zone and the DSCDO are assisting the families in locating permanent housing.
In the wake of this misfortune, DSCDO will be collecting donations of furniture, household furnishings, clothing and other needed supplies for the benefit of these families. Financial contributions can also be made to assist the displaced families by making a deposit at any Chase Bank in N.E. Ohio or by mailing checks to Detroit Shoreway (with memo noting “W. 83rd St Explosion Relief Fund), 6516 Detroit Avenue, Suite 1, Cleveland, OH 44102.
Councilman Zone and DSCDO will also be planning a fundraising benefit to assist families who were displaced by this explosion. Details regarding this fundraiser will be made available in the near future. To volunteer or to purchase tickets, please call the Detroit Shoreway office at (216) 961-4242.
“In the midst of such a tragedy, it is wonderful to see the community rally to help the families in need,” said Councilman Zone. “The West 83rd Street explosion is truly a huge misfortune to the neighborhood and together we will do everything we can to assist the victims of this disaster.”
