Councilman Dow proposes to name school and street after longtime Ward 7 Councilwoman Fannie M. Lewis

Current Ward 7 Councilman TJ Dow is proposing to honor his predecessor, long serving Councilwoman Fannie M. Lewis, by renaming Wade Park Elementary School after her and designating Star Avenue in her honor.

“Fannie Mae Lewis was not only a leader, but an icon.  The difference between a leader and an icon is that an icon continues to influence people even after they are gone,” said Councilman Dow.  “ I am reminded of this as I go door to door, talking to residents and leaders in the community.  They speak about how the late Councilwoman Lewis shaped and affected their lives.  It is now time to honor her and keep her in remembrance for her birthday in the month of June.”

At this evening’s Council meeting, Councilman Dow will ask his colleagues to support his proposal to urge the Cleveland Metropolitan School District to rename Ward Park Elementary School in honor former Councilwoman Fannie Lewis.   With the support of Council, this proposal will move on to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Council will await action from the School Board.

Councilman Dow will also introduce an ordinance to designate Star Avenue in honor of Ms. Lewis as Fannie M. Lewis Avenue.

“Councilwoman Fannie Lewis dedicated her life to bettering the city of Cleveland,” said Councilman Dow.  “These designations are only a small token of our gratitude and appreciation for everything she did for our city.”

Ms. Lewis’ family will be in attendance at the meeting to accept the resolution.
