At the start of a new term...
At our swearing-in ceremony for 19 members of City Council, I could not help but think that the city is in good hands with this diverse and dedicated group. The past four years were challenging but we met that challenge by balancing the budget, making tough decisions, and focusing our energies on the foreclosure and economic crises. I am proud of what we did and believe we will do even a better job these next four years.
We have forged a good working relationship with Mayor Frank G. Jackson and his Administration. We don't always agree but we try not to be disagreeable. Council is going to keep pushing on issues important to the neighborhoods whether it is for better City services or stronger enforcement of laws. Council has an important role to play in holding the administration accountable.
Many positive developments are in the foreseeable future including opening up the lakefront, a new convention center, a casino, neighborhood street scapes and new public schools. Cleveland has many enviable assets and we plan to make the best use of our assets. We applaud our world class orchestra, cheer on our favorite college and pro sports teams, and yell bravo in our first class theater district.
Cleveland has what makes for a great city - natural beauty, hard-working citizens, first-rate institutions, international art treasures, three professional sports teams, a medical mecca, and a civic conscience. We remain mindful of the fact that we are stewards of this great City.
In the next four years, Council will work hard to continue the restoration of our City. We are proud to serve the citizens of Cleveland.
